Troubleshooting & Repair, in practice
A breaker that trips repeatedly is doing its job. It is protecting the wire from something, and the fix is finding the something — an overloaded circuit, a failing device, a nicked conductor, moisture in an outdoor box. Fitting a larger breaker removes the protection and keeps the fault.
Warm outlets and discolored plates are worth taking seriously the same day. They almost always trace to a loose connection, frequently a backstabbed device where the wire was pushed into the back rather than landed on the screw terminal, and that is how connections heat up over years.

FAQ
Troubleshooting & Repair — questions
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Because the circuit is overloaded, there is a short somewhere on it, a ground fault is occurring, or the breaker itself has worn out. A breaker that trips when a specific appliance runs is an overload; one that trips immediately when reset is a short; one that trips at random on a circuit with damp locations is often a ground fault. Resetting it repeatedly is not a fix, and a breaker that trips is doing its job.
Is a warm outlet or switch dangerous?
Yes — treat it as urgent. A warm outlet, a dimmer that gets hot, a switch plate that is discolored or a faint burning smell means a loose connection or an overloaded circuit heating up behind the wall. Loose connections are the most common cause of electrical fires in houses. Switch the circuit off at the breaker and have it looked at.
