Panel Upgrades, in practice
Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels are the two that come up most often in older Nashville homes, and the concern with both is documented: breakers that do not reliably trip under fault. They are not a code violation to own, but most electricians will not add circuits to one, and most home inspectors will flag it at sale.
A service upgrade is usually driven by load rather than by age. Add an EV charger, a heat pump, a shop compressor and a modern kitchen to a house wired for a 1960s appliance list and the service becomes the limit long before the wiring does.

FAQ
Panel Upgrades — questions
How do I know if my electrical panel needs replacing?
If it is a Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Sylvania panel, it needs replacing regardless of how it looks — those brands have documented failure to trip on a fault. Otherwise the signs are breakers that trip constantly, a 100-amp service in a house with electric heat, a range and a dryer, no room for a circuit you need, warmth or a burning smell at the panel, and a fuse box of any kind.
Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade?
Yes, everywhere in Middle Tennessee. A panel replacement or service upgrade is permitted and inspected work, and it usually involves the utility disconnecting and reconnecting the service. An electrician offering to do it without a permit is offering to leave you with a panel your insurer and the next buyer’s inspector will both ask about.
